John A. Macdonald, Oliver Mowat & Alexander Campbell

Macdonald and his first two law clerks, Oliver Mowat and Alexander Campbell, will make history. Within a few decades, all three become Fathers of Confederation, receive knighthoods and serve in federal cabinets. Mowat also serves for many years as premier of Ontario, while Campbell becomes Lieutenant Governor of the province. Both are appointed to the Canadian Senate. As historian Donald Swainson puts it: “the little office on Wellingston Street contained an extraordinary threesome.”
